REPORT SECTOR 1

GENERAL

  1. Last meeting held on 15 October 2009 @ Hofland Park was.

Not well attended possibly due to ANC safety and security meeting held the previous evening.

  1. Complaints received from the community about 2 young children loitering around the Bez Park area harassing and begging from people in the street. The children were identified and Mrs. Gloria Venter and I addressed the matter with the father who undertook to take the matter in hand. They have been asked to leave the caravan park and hopefully this will not occur again.
  2. The problem of the vagrants living in the koppies was once again mentioned and Capt Skosana informed the meeting that some of these boys have been arrested.
  3. Another matter that was raised was the problem of taxis that now illegally parked in 3rd Avenue. Capt Skosana has already engaged in addressing the matter.
  4. A report was received that the outside lights of Mrs. Deborah Frazer were all stolen off the walls surrounding her house. The sector will endeavor to establish a neighborhood watch in that section of 8th Avenue a.s.a.p.
  5. The attendees expressed their appreciation for the visible policing that has been taking place.

ANTI-CRIME PREVENTION INITIATIVES

  1. Since the general belief is held that crime can be caused by poverty, an initiative was taken by the sector in establishing a feeding scheme with some members of the community including Mrs. Selinah Pakkies and a facility has been made available to the sector with the intention of establishing a sector 1 Youth Desk with the youth worker at Hofland Park. The youth worker at the park resigned in the meantime and we are awaiting the appointment of another youth worker for incorporation into the sector under the youth desk. We were later informed that the Youth Desk at the station had been disbanded.
  2. A vegetable garden has also been established at the park to supplement the food that is distributed on Tuesdays and Fridays which are done through donations from the community. Currently about 70 people mainly young women are receiving aid.
  3. Subsequently a sewing class was also started with about 30 ladies receiving sewing lessons.
  4. Subsequent to the increase of people receiving aid we appeal to the community for donations to sustain the scheme. Inquiries can be made to Mrs. Selinah Pakkies on 082 263 6823 or Pastor Alf Kent on 072 634 1936.
  5. We are also in the process of engaging with SANCA to arrange a Saturday afternoon workshop for the community in anti-drug campaign in the near future.
